India are Devanquished; Pakistan (Ka)p(i)leased

It was the last match between the two sub-continental nations before the Reliance World Cup, which they were co-hosting. While India’s playing eleven was unchanged, Pakistan made one change to theirs – Tauseef Ahmed made way for Mudassar Nazar. Imran Khan, the latter’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the Indians.

Sunil Gavaskar, who faced eight balls, did not get off the mark. Khan broke the five-run stand. The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 15 balls, scored five. He was caught by Saleem Yousuf off the bowling of Wasim Akram.

Mohammad Azharuddin faced five balls, scoring just a run. He was trapped leg before wicket by Khan, who broke the third-wicket stand, which was worth just a couple. Dilip Vengsarkar, the player of the match, scored 95. His 151-ball innings included seven boundaries. He was unbeaten.

The fourth-wicket P(rabhak)artnership was worth 75. Manoj, whose 51-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. He was run out. Ravi Shastri, whose 23-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was caught by Javed Miandad. Abdul Qadir broke the 34-run stand.

Kapil Dev, India’s skipper, scored 19. His 27-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Yousuf. Khan broke the 35-run stand. The seventh-wicket S(t)(adan)and was worth nine. Viswanath, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a couple. He was run out.

Arun faced 14 balls, scoring half-a-dozen. He was caught by Rameez Raja. Khan broke the 19-run stand. He, and Gopal Sharma (who did not bat), never represented Bharat again. Maninder Singh, who faced three balls, scored just a couple. He was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded a dozen extras. India scored 183 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Manzoor Elahi and Saleem Jaffar bowled five wicketless overs each. While the former conceded 29, the latter conceded 21. Mudassar bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 39.

Qadir and Akram bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 39, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 21. Khan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27, picking up four scalps.

Ijaz Ahmed, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Singh broke the 22-run stand. Raja, whose 72-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 53. He was caught by the substitute off the bowling of the Mumbaikar, who broke the second-wicket partnership, which was worth S(hastr)ixty-nine.

Saleem Malik, whose 98-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 61. He was unbeaten, as was Miandad, who scored 52. His 67-ball innings included five boundaries. India conceded nine extras. Pakistan scored 184 for the loss of two wickets off 41.4 overs, winning by eight wickets with 50 balls to spare.

Azharuddin bowled four wicketless balls, conceding half-a-dozen. Arun bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 11. Sharma bowled seven wicketless overs, conceding 36. Prabhakar, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 30.

Dev bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27. Shastri and Singh bowled 10 overs each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 37, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 28.
