India made just one Cha(uha)nge to their playing eleven – Venkatapathy Raju made way for Rajesh. Pakistan made half-a-dozen changes to the team that last played the Indians – Zahid Fazal, Javed Miandad, Imran Khan, Wasim Haider, Moin Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed made way for Saeed Anwar, Basit Ali, Asif Mujtaba, Rashid Latif, Akram Raza and Ata-ur-Rehman.

Saleem Malik, Pakistan’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the Indians. Ajay Jadeja, whose 45-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. He was caught by Latif. Aaqib Javed broke the 62-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 64-ball (Sach)innings included 10 boundaries and three sixes, scored 73. He was caught by Ali. Raza broke the 49-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, scored 29. His 34-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six. He was caught by Inzamam-ul-Haq. Malik broke the 45-run stand. Atul Bedade, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was stumped by Latif. Malik broke the eight-run stand. Vinod Kambli, who faced 13 balls, scored four. He was caught by Raza. Ata-ur-Rehman broke the 15-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on eight. Nayan Mongia, who faced nine balls, scored five. He was run out by Aamer Sohail. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 68-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 47. He was caught by Latif off the bowling of Ata-ur-Rehman.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 10. Bhupinder Singh Senior, who faced 13 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was run out, and never represented India again. Chauhan, whose 18-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 13. He was caught by Anwar, the player of the match. Aaqib broke the 21-run stand.

The last-wicket pair put on just a run. Anil Kumble, who faced 13 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was run out. Javagal Srinath, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten. Pakistan conceded 15 extras. India were dismissed for 219 off 46.3 overs. Akram bowled 8.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 36, picking up a wicket.

Raza, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket. Ata-ur-Rehman and Aaqib bowled nine overs apiece, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 50, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 41. Malik, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 49. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Sohail, whose 39-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 20. Chauhan broke the 77-run stand. Inzamam, who faced 11 balls, scored a run. He was caught by Mongia. Chauhan broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth a dozen. Anwar, whose 70-ball innings included nine boundaries and two sixes, scored 71. Chauhan trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 17-run stand.

Malik, who faced 52 balls, scored 25. He was caught by Azharuddin. Srinath broke the 65-run stand. Ali, whose 76-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 75. He was unbeaten, as was Mujtaba, who scored 16. His 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries.

India conceded 15 extras. Pakistan, who scored 223 for the loss of four wickets off 44.3 overs, won by six wickets with 33 balls to spare. Jadeja, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded nine. Singh, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 44.

Tendulkar, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 34. Kumble, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 26. Srinath, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 59. He picked up a wicket. Chauhan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 47. He picked up three scalps.

The Indians advanced to the semi-finals.
