India, Devorld champs, are Pa(k)i(sta)ned

It was a 42-over-a-side match. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Madan Lal made way for Dilip Vengsarkar and Raju Kulkarni. Pakistan made just one – one Ahmed (Tauseef) replaced another (Younis). On winning the toss, Kapil Dev, India’s skipper chose to bat.

India’s openers put on 21. Sunil Gavaskar, whose 24-ball innings included a boundary, wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he was run out. The second-wicket pair didn’t open its account. Mohammad Azharuddin, who faced a couple of balls, failed to get off the mark. He was dismissed by Tauseef.

Vengsarkar, who faced 22 balls, scored a couple. He was trapped leg before wicket by Saleem Jaffar, who broke the 15-run stand. Viswanath, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Jaffar broke the eight-run S(t)(adan)and.

Raman Lamba, whose 62-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. He was caught by Abdul Qadir. Jaffar broke the fifth-wicket stand, which was worth just four. Dev scored half-a-dozen. Ravi Shastri, whose 43-ball innings included a boundary, scored 21. He was caught by Saleem Yousuf. Wasim Akram broke the seventh-wicket partnership, which was worth 25. Manoj Prabhakar, who faced 58 balls, scored 17. He was unbeaten.

Kulkarni scored 15. His run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was caught by Tauseef. Qadir broke the 21-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair put on five. Akram and Tauseef bowled 10 overs apiece. The former, whose spell included three maidens, conceded 37, picking up a wicket. The latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceding 18. He picked up a couple of wickets. Jaffar, the player of the match, bowled nine overs, conceding 25. He picked up three scalps.

Yousuf, whose 29-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. He was trapped leg before wicket by Dev, who broke the 33-run stand. The second-wicket pair put on 32. Rameez Raja, whose 74-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. He was run out.

Saleem Malik, whose 28-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. He was caught by Vengsarkar. Singh broke the third-wicket stand, which was worth a dozen. Javed Miandad scored 22. His 55-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by the substitute. Dev broke the 37-run stand.
