India (Pa)koncede match (Bish)and series

Both teams made three changes to their playing eleven. While India replaced Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Syed Kirmani with Chetan Chauhan, Anshuman Gaekwad and debutant Bharath Reddy, Pakistan replaced Sadiq Mohammad, Wasim Raja and Sikandar Bakht with Majid Khan, Asif Iqbal and Imran Khan.

On winning the toss, Mushtaq Mohammad, the Pakistani skipper, chose to bat. Azmat Rana, who faced 23 balls, scored 20. Mohinder Amarnath broke the 38-run stand. Zaheer Abbas scored a run-a-ball 17. He was caught by Karsan Ghavri. Srinivas Venkataraghavan broke the 28-run stand. Majid, who faced 55 balls, scored 37. Venkat broke the 27-run stand.

Javed Miandad, who faced 10 balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he was trapped leg before wicket by Mohinder, who broke the 18-run stand. Hasan Jamil, who faced 33 balls, scored 26. Kapil Dev broke the 56-run stand.

Asif Iqbal, the player of the match, faced 72 balls, scoring 62. He was caught by Bishan Singh Bedi, India’s skipper. Ghavri broke the 23-run stand. Mushtaq, who faced 23 balls, scored 16. He was unbeaten.

Imran, who faced eight balls, scored 10. He was caught by Surinder, who did not play A(mar)nather ODI. Kapil Dev broke the 14-run stand. Sarfraz Nawaz, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 10 extras. Pakistan scored 205 f0r the loss of seven wickets off 40 overs. Bedi, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 44. Ghavri, who bowled eight overs, conceded 33. He picked up a wicket. Kapil, Mohinder and Venkat bowled eight overs apiece, picking up a couple of scalps each. They conceded 49, 35 and 34, respectively.

Chauhan, who faced 28 balls, scored 23. He was caught by Wasim Bari. Jamil broke the 44-run stand. Gaekwad, who faced 115 balls, scored 78. He was unbeaten. Surinder, who faced 75 balls, scored 62. He was caught by Imran. Iqbal broke the 119-run stand. Gundappa Viswanath, who faced 13 balls, scored eight. He was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded a dozen extras, India scored 183 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 37.4 overs. Nawaz bowled 6.4 wicketless overs, conceded 16. His spell included four consecutive bouncers that were out of the batsmen’s reach but weren’t called wides. Protesting his short-pitched bowling, Bedi conceded the match, which was awarded to the hosts, who won the three-match series 2-1. It was his last ODI as skipper.

Imran, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 22. Saleem Altaf, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 41. Jamil and Iqbal bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 48, the latter conceded 44.

The Indians are (Pak)i(sta)ndeed (Be)disheartened

It was a 40-overs-a-side match. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Chetan Chauhan and Anshuman Gaekwad made way for returnee Sunil Gavaskar and debutant Yashpal Sharma.

Pakistan made five changes to theirs – Majid Khan, Mudassar Nazar, Mohsin Khan, Imran Khan and Iqbal Qasim made way for Sadiq Mohammad, debutant Azmat Rana, Wasim Raja, Saleem Altaf and Sikander Bakht.

Mushtaq Mohammad, the Pakistani skipper, won the toss, inserting the visitors. Gavaskar, who faced nine balls, scored four. Altaf broke the seven-run stand. The second-wicket stand was worth just a couple. Surinder Amarnath, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was run out.

Gundappa Viswanath, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was caught by Raja. Altaf broke the two-run stand. Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 21 balls, scored just three. He was caught by Raja. Bakht broke the five-run stand. Mohinder Amarnath, who faced 85 balls, scored 34. He was unbeaten.

Sharma, who faced 26 balls, scored 11. Hasan Jamil, the player of the match, broke the 20-run stand. Kapil Dev, who faced 16 balls, scored five. He was caught by Mushtaq. Jamil broke the 12-run stand. Syed Kirmani, who faced 16 balls, scored five. He was trapped leg before wicket by Jamil, who broke the 12-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 11. Karsan Ghavri, who faced 14 balls, scored five. He was run out. The ninth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. He was bowled by Bakht. Bishan Singh Bedi, India’s skipper, faced 10 balls, scoring just a couple. He was caught by Javed Miandad. The eight-run stand (Na)waz broken by Sarfraz.  

Pakistan conceded nine extras. India were bundled out for a paltry 79 off 34.2 overs. Raja, bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 28. Nawaz bowled 5.2 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded just half-a-dozen, and picked up a wicket. Altaf bowled five overs, including a couple of maidens. He was in seventh heaven, because he picked up a couple of wickets.

Bakht bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 11, picking up a couple of wickets. Jamil bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens, He conceded 18, picking up three scalps.

Sadiq, the youngest of the five Mohammad brothers, faced three balls, scoring just a run. He was caught by Sharma. Kapil broke the stand, which was worth just a couple. Rana, who faced 50 balls, scored 22. He was unbeaten.

Zaheer Abbas, who faced 46 balls, scored 48. He was caught by Kapil. Interestingly, Gavaskar broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth 79. Miandad, who faced three balls, scored four. He was unbeaten.

India conceded eight extras. Pakistan, who scored 83 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 16.5 overs, won by eight wickets with 139 balls to spare. Bedi and Amarnath bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 12, the latter conceded four.

Ghavri, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 18. Kapil, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 31. He picked up a wicket. Gavaskar, who bowled five balls, conceded 10. He picked up a scalp.

The hosts levelled the three-match series 1-1.

The Indians Be(di)at the Pakistanis

It was a 40-overs-a-side match. It wasn’t just India’s first match against Pakistan, but also their first B(ed)ilateral series of three matches.

The visitors made five changes to their playing eleven – Parthasarthi Sharma, Eknath Solkar, Sudhakar Rao, Pochiah Krishnamurthy and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar made way for a couple of returnees (Gundappa Viswanath and Karsan Ghavri) and three debutants – Chetan Chauhan, Surinder Amarnath (Mohinder’s older brother) and Kapil Dev.

Bishan Singh, India’s skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss. Chauhan, who faced eleven balls, scored just a couple. Needless to say, Sarfraz Nawaz was in seventh heaven. Anshuman Gaekwad, whose 35-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16. He was caught by Imran Khan. Hasan Jamil broke the 53-run stand.

The third-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Surinder, whose 41-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 37. He was caught by Zaheer Abbas off the bowling of Jamil. The fourth-wicket pair put on a dozen. Viswanath, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was run out.

The fifth-wicket pair on 76. Dilip Vengsarkar, whose 57-ball innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 34. He was run out. Mohinder, the player of the match, scored 51. His 61-ball innings included five boundaries. Nawaz broke the 15-run stand.

Kapil, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. He was unbeaten. The seventh-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Syed Kirmani, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was bowled by Nawaz. Ghavri, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded seven extras. India scored 170 for the loss of seven wickets off 40 overs. Mudassar Nazar, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 32. Imran and Iqbal Qasim bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden, apiece. They conceded 38 and 30, respectively.

Jamil bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29, picking up a couple of wickets. Nawaz bowled eight overs, including a maiden, He conceded 34, picking up three scalps.

Mudassar, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. He was trapped leg before wicket by Ghavri, who broke the 22-run stand. Abbas, whose 39-ball innings included a boundary, scored 26. Mohinder broke the 60-run stand.

Majid Khan, Imran’s cousin, scored 50. His 64-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Mohinder broke the seven-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair put on 11. Mushtaq – Pakistan’s skipper, the fourth of the Mohammad brothers and Bedi’s Northamptonshire teammate – faced seven balls, scoring half-a-dozen. He was run out.

The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Javed Miandad, who faced 19 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was trapped leg before wicket by Bedi. Jamil, who faced 19 balls, scored 16. He was caught by Gaekwad. Bedi broke the 19-run stand.

Imran, who faced a dozen deliveries, scored just a couple. Kapil broke the 15-run stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on five. Mohsin Khan, whose 33-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. He was run out. Wasim Bari, who faced 13 balls, scored 11. He was unbeaten, as was Nawaz, who faced 13 balls, scoring 14.

India conceded eight extras. Pakistan, who scored 166 for the loss of eight wickets off 40 overs, lost by four runs.

Venkat bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 14. Ghavri and Kapil bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They conceded 35 and 27, respectively. Bedi and Mohinder bowled eight overs each, picking up two scalps apiece. They conceded 44 and 38, respectively.

India led the three-match series 1-0.
