India, Devorld champs, beat Pakistan

India, playing their first limited-overs international since winning the World Cup, made no changes to the eleven that dethroned the Calypso kings at Lord’s. It was a 46-overs-a-side match.

Imran Khan, who led Pakistan the last time they played India, wasn’t in the eleven on this occasion. He was replaced as skipper by Zaheer Abbas. They made three other changes – Mansoor Akhtar, Ijaz Faqih and Sarfraz Nawaz didn’t play.

The match marked the One-day International debuts of Qasim Umar and Azeem Hafeez. Mohammad Nazir rounded off the quartet. Dev, India’s Kap(il)tain, inserted the Pakistanis on winning the toss.

Mudassar Nazar, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Syed Kirmani. Dev broke the one-run stand. Mohsin Khan, who faced 42 balls, scored six. Balvinder Singh Sandhu broke the 22-run stand.

Abbas, who faced 35 balls, scored 20. His innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Kirmani. Sandhu broke the 12-run stand. Javed Miandad scored 66. His 110-ball innings included four boundaries. He was unbeaten.

Wasim Raja, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Dev. Sandhu broke the one-run stand. Umar scored five. His 26-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Kirmani. Roger Binny broke the 26-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 61. Wasim Bari, who faced 55 balls, scored 18. He was run out. Tahir Naqqash, who faced six balls, scored a run. He was caught by Mohinder Amarnath. Binny broke the six-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair wasn’t in seventh heaven. Jalal-ud-Din, who faced four balls, scored five. His innings included a boundary. He was run out. Hafeez scored five. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 25 extras. Pakistan scored 151 for the loss of eight wickets off 46 overs. Amarnath and Madan bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 27, the (La)latter, who spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 22.

Dev bowled nine overs, including three maidens. He conceded 16 and picked up a wicket. Binny bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 34 and picked up a couple of wickets.

Sandhu bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 27 and picked up three scalps.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 26 balls, scored 16. His innings included a couple of boundaries. Jalal-ud-Din trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 30-run stand.

Sunil Gavaskar, who faced 60 balls, scored 33. His innings included four boundaries. He was caught by Bari. Mudassar broke the 39-run stand.

Amarnath, the player of the match, scored 60. His 118-run stand included five boundaries. He was unbeaten. Yashpal Sharma, who faced 15 balls, scored a couple. Mudassar broke the eight-run stand.

Sandeep Patil, who faced 14 balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Miandad. Mudassar broke the four-run stand. Kirti Azad, who faced 13 balls, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was caught by Raja. Nazir broke the 32-run stand.

Dev, who faced 23 balls, scored 18. He scored a couple of boundaries and a six. Binny, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded 15 extras. India, who scored 152 for the loss of six wickets off 43 overs, won by four wickets with three overs to spare. Naqqash bowled five overs, including a maiden. He conceded 16. He didn’t pick up a wicket.

Jalal-ud-Din bowled eight overs, conceding 34. He picked up a wicket, as did Hafeez and Nazir, who bowled 10 overs apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 27.

Mudassar bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 17 and picked up three scalps. India led the two-match series 1-0.

The IndianS(uni)lose yet (Pakist)another series

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri and Lal Mad(an)e way for Arun Lal and a couple of One-day International debutants – left-arm spinner Maninder Singh and medium-pacer Thirumalai Sekhar.

Pakistan made just one – Shahid Mahboob made way for Sarfraz Nawaz. It was a 40-overs-a-side match. On winning the toss, Sunil Gavaskar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Arun, who faced 34 balls, scored 16. His innings included a six. Nawaz broke the 41-run stand.

Mohinder Amarnath, who faced 22 balls, scored eight. His innings included a boundary. Nawaz broke the 13-run stand. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 76 balls, scored 48. His innings included five boundaries. He was caught by Tahir Naqqash. Ijaz Faqih broke the 66-run stand.

Yashpal Sharma, who faced 42 balls, scored 27. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Imran Khan, Pakistan’s skipper. Nawaz broke the four-run stand.

Kapil Dev, who faced 18 balls, scored 20. His innings included a boundary and a six. He was caught by Mansoor Akhtar. Imran broke the 38-run stand.

Gavaskar, who faced 26 balls, scored 23. His innings included a boundary and a six. He was caught by Wasim Raja. Imran broke the 30-run stand.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 22 balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten, as was Syed Kirmani, who faced eight balls, scoring a run.

Faqih bowled eight overs, conceding 51. He picked up a wicket. Imran bowled eight overs, including three maidens. He conceded 15 and picked up a couple of wickets. Nawaz bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31 and picked up three scalps.

Mohsin Khan, who faced 10 balls, scored five. His innings included a boundary. Balvinder Singh Sandhu trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the nine-run stand.  Mudassar faced 89 balls, scoring 61. His innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten.

Zaheer Abbas, the player of the match, scored 113. His 99-ball innings included 11 boundaries and three sixes. He was caught by Amarnath. Sandhu broke the 170-run stand. Javed Miandad, who faced a dozen balls, scored six. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. The Pakistanis, who scored 198 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 35 overs, won by eight wickets with five overs to spare.

Gavaskar bowled a wicketless overs, conceding four. Srikkanth bowled a couple of overs, conceding 27. He was wicketless, as was Sekhar, who bowled four overs, conceding 19. Dev bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 11.

Singh and Sharma bowled eight wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 39. Sandhu bowled seven overs, conceding 38. He picked up both the wickets that fell.

Sunny caP(akis)ta(i)ns India to victory

It was New Year’s Eve, and it seemed the rain gods wanted to celebrate. Sunil Gavaskar was back as skipper. Arun Lal made way for him. And as Dilip Doshi’s brief One-day International career had come to an end, Madan Lal was the second change to the Indian side.

Pakistan made a couple of changes too – Jalal-ud-Din and Sikander Bakht made way for Tahir Naqqash’s return and the One-day International debut of Shahid Mahboob. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s skipper, who was, incidentally, born in Lahore, chose to bat on winning the toss.

Mohsin Khan, who faced a Kapil of balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Dev, who broke the one-run stand. Mudassar Nazar, who faced 32 balls, scored 24. He was caught by Ravi Shastri, who broke the 69-run stand.

Zaheer Abbas scored 105. His 82-ball innings included eight boundaries and a six. He was caught by Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Mohinder Amarnath broke the 158-run stand. 

Javed Miandad, the player of the match, faced 77 balls, scoring 119. His innings included six boundaries and five boundaries. He was unbeaten, as was Wasim Raja, who faced a couple of balls, scoring a run.

India conceded three extras. Pakistan’s innings, which was curtailed to 33 overs due to rain, scored 252 for the loss of three wickets.

Balvinder Singh Sandhu and Madan Lal bowled seven wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 52, the latter conceded 35. Amarnath bowed five overs, conceding 50. He picked up a wicket.

Dev and Shastri bowled seven overs apiece, picking up a wicket each. While the former conceded 73, the latter conceded 39.

India’s target was revised to 176 off 27 overs, because at the end of their 27th over, the Pakistanis had scored 175 for the loss of a couple of wickets.

Srikkanth, who faced 29 balls, scored 39. His innings included three boundaries and as many sixes. He was caught by Abbas. Mahboob broke the 57-run stand.

Sandeep Patil scored 51. His run-a-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was caught by Raja. Mudassar broke the 115-run stand.

Dev, who faced five balls, scored eight. Mudassar trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 13-run stand. Gavaskar scored 69. His 76-ball innings included seven boundaries and a six. He was caught by Mansoor Akhtar. Naqqash was in seventh heaven.

Yashpal Sharma scored four off as many balls. He was unbeaten, as was Amarnath, who faced a couple of balls, scoring a run. Pakistan conceded 21 extras. India scored 193 for the loss of four wickets off 27 overs, winning by 18 runs.

Imran bowled five overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 23. He was wicketless, as was Ijaz Faqih, whose seven overs yielded 39.

Naqqash, who bowled six overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket, as did Mahboob, who bowled seven overs, conceding 55. Mudassar bowled two overs, conceding 13. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Pakistan beat India; Kapil Devastated

While Pakistan made one change to their side (Tahir Naqqash was replaced by Sikander Bakht), India made two – Madan Lal and the most notable absentee of them all, Sunil Gavaskar, made way for Arun Lal and Dilip Doshi.

The teams were Kap(il)tained by the subcontinent’s best all-rounders – Dev and Imran Khan. On winning the toss, the latter chose to bat. The openers put on 41. Mohsin Khan, who faced 118 balls, scored 117. His innings include nine boundaries and a six.

Mudassar Nazar, who faced 29 balls, scored a dozen. He was run out. Zaheer Abbas, the player of the match, scored 118 off 86 balls. His innings included 10 boundaries and four sixes. Dev broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth 205.

Although he scored just three, Javed Miandad was in seventh heaven, because he was unbeaten. India conceded 13 extras. Pakistan scored 263 for the loss of two wickets off their allotted 40 overs.

Ravi Shastri bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 31. Mohinder Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma bowled six wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 46, the latter conceded 45.

Doshi, who was playing his last One-day International, bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 58. Balvinder Singh Sandhu, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 28. Dev, who bowled eight overs, conceded 42. He picked up a scalp.

While Roger Binny wasn’t picked for the series, Dilip Doshi wasn’t in India’s playing eleven. Sunil Gavaskar, who replaced Dev as India’s Kap(il)tain, inserted Pakistan on winning the toss.

Their openers put on just five. Mohsin Khan, who faced 10 balls, scored all of them. His innings included a boundary. He was dismissed by Madan Lal. Zaheer Abbas scored 10. Hs run-a-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Dev off the bowling of Lal.
