India don’t (Paki)s(ta)nap loS(ach)ing streak

The match was attended by 10,531 people. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Debasis Mohanty made way for V V S Laxman and Ajit Agarkar. Pakistan made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Abdul Razzaq and Saqlain Mushtaq made way for Shoaib Malik and Waqar Younis.

While Nikhil Chopra was India’s twelfth man, Mohammad Wasim was Pakistan’s twelfth man. On winning the toss, Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 50 off 48 balls in 34 balls. Saeed Anwar, whose 48-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 44. India made just one change to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman made way for Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Pakistan made one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Waqar Younis made way for Azhar Mahmood. The match was attended by 11,263 people.

On winning the toss, Tendulkar, India's skipper, chose to bat. While the openers put on 50 off 47 balls in 36 minutes, he scored 41. His 46-ball (Mo)innings included five boundaries. Ninety-one ballS(ach)into the match, he was caught by Khan. Abdul Razzaq broke the 88-run partnership in 69 minutes. India’s 100 came off 116 balls in 88 minutes.

Akram, who faced five balls, scored four. An over later, he was caught by Srinath. Needless to say, Mohanty was in seventh heaven. Mushtaq had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Tendulkar. Srinath broke the three-run stand.

Mahmood’s 50 came off 34 balls in 38 minutes. It included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six. He scored 67 off 50 balls, which included seven boundaries and the six. The match was delayed 44.3 balls into the innings as he received attention for a cramp in his leg. Yousuf acted as his runner.

The next ball (i.e., seven balls after Mushtaq’s dismissal), he was caught by Kanitkar. Kumble broke the nine-ball stand. India conceded 13 extras. Pakistan, who were dismissed for 219 off 44.4 overs, lost by 48 runs.

Singh, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 45. Srinath and Prasad bowled eight overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 41. Mohanty, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 42. He picked up a couple of wickets. Kumble, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 40. He picked up four scalps.

The Pakistanis beaT(endulk)arch-rivals Indians again

India made a couple of Ch(opr)anges to their playing eleven – Devang Gandhi and Nikhil made way for Jacob Martin and Debasis Mohanty. Incidentally, Chopra was their twelfth man. Pakistan made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians. Azhar Mahmood was their twelfth man.

On winning the toss, Tendulkar, India’s skipper, (Sach)inserted the Pakistanis. Shahid Afridi, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Thirty-four balls later, he was caught by Tendulkar. Mohanty broke the 22-run stand. Pakistan’s 50 came off 51 balls in 71 minutes.

Saeed Anwar, whose 66-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 43. Sixty-four balls later, he was caught by Sameer Dighe. Sourav Ganguly broke the 60-run partnership. It was India’s first One-day International of the 21st century, and was attended by 15,583 people. On winning the toss, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Laxman, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Forty-six balls into the match, he was caught by Shahid Afridi. Waqar Younis broke the 15-run stand.

Azhar’s back; Pakistan beat India

Pakistan crush India yet agA(zharudd)in

The Coca-Cola Cup, which commenced in Sharjah just three days after the final of the Pepsi Cup, while India hosted. Besides the difference in the venues, the other difference between the two triangular series was the third team vying for the title – while Sri Lanka made the Pepsi Cup a sub-continental affair, England joined India and Pakistan in the Emirate.

Four days after Pakistan beat India in the Pepsi Cup final, the arch-rivals met again in Sharjah. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Amay Khurasiya and Ajit Agarkar (Moham)made way for Azharuddin (who was leading the team) and Sunil Joshi. Pakistan made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians.

Another similarity between the two matches was the toss. On winning it, Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 11. Saeed Anwar, who faced 11 balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Sixteen balls into the match, Anil Kumble ran him out.

Pakistan conceded 13 extras. India scored 256 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Mohammad Zahid bowled five overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29. He was wicketless, as was Aaqib Javed, who bowled seven overs, conceding 26.

Afridi, who bowled eight overs, conceded 43. He picked up a wicket. Sohail and Mahmood bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 59, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 30. Mushtaq, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 67. He picked up four scalps.

Afridi, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Fifty balls into the chase, Srinath broke the 48-run stand. Saeed Anwar, whose 94-ball innings included 10 boundaries, scored 83.  A hundred and forty-four balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Joshi, who broke the 119-run partnership.

Sohail, whose 125-ball innings included seven boundaries and three sixes, scored 97. He was unbeaten. The third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Inzamam, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was trapped leg before wicket by Joshi.

Saleem Malik, whose 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. Sixty-four balls later, he was caught by Agarkar. Srinath broke the 46-run stand. Ijaz Ahmed, who faced four balls, scored eight. His runs came by way of boundaries. Five balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Srinath broke the nine-run stand.

Khan, who faced a dozen balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten. India conceded 23 extras. Pakistan, who scored 258 for the loss of five wickets off 48.2 overs, won by five wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Jadeja, who bowled eight wicketless balls, conceded 10. Raul, who never represented India again, bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 14. Ganguly, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 45.

Agarkar bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46. Venkatesh Prasad, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 47. Joshi, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 36. He picked up a couple of wickets. Srinath, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 50. He picked up three scalps.

The Pakistanis won the five-match series 4-1.
