India (Pa)k(ist)an't play the reM(oh)(a)inder

India made four changes to their playing eleven. Sunil Gavaskar, Surinder Khanna, Kapil Dev and Chetan Sharma made way for Anshuman Gaekwad, Ghulam Parkar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Syed Kirmani.

Pakistan made just one to theirs – the omission of Mohsin Khan (who was married to Hindi film actress Reena Roy and debuted as an actor in a Hindi film that released in 1989, and was, interestingly, titled Batwara) paved the way for Sajid Ali to make his One-day International debut.

It was a 40-overs-a-side match. Zaheer Abbas, Pakistan’s skipper, inserted India, led for the first (and only) time by Mohinder Amarnath, on winning the toss.

Gaekwad, who faced 20 balls, scored a dozen. Mudassar Nazar broke the 35-run partnership. The second-wicket stand was worth 18. Parkar, who faced 31 balls, scored 20. He was dismissed by Mudassar.

Vengsarkar, who faced 102 balls, scored 94. He was unbeaten. Sandeep Patil, who faced 83 balls, scored 59. Tauseef Ahmed broke the 143-run stand. Shastri, who faced eight balls, scored (Ra)VI. He was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded 19 extras. India scored 240 for the loss of three wickets off 40 overs. Naved Anjum bowled a wicketless over, conceding 10.

Tahir Naqqash, Rashid Khan and Manzoor Elahi bowled eight wicketless overs apiece. They conceded 55, 43 and 24, respectively. Elahi's spell included three maidens.

Ahmed bowled seven overs, conceding 42. He picked up a wicket. Mudassar bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 27 and picked up a couple of scalps.

Pakistan didn’t bat, as the match was halted, and the rest of the tour was called off, due to the assassination of India’s prime minister, Indira Gandhi.

The hosts won the three-match series (which became a two-match series) 1-0*.

It was the last limited-overs international appearance of Parkar and Balvinder Singh Sandhu.

(*Note: The third One-day International, which was slated to take place at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar, on November 2, 1984, was cancelled without a ball bowled.)
