India (Gavask)are at the P(ak)i(sta)nnacle

India made just one change to their playing eleven for the final – Roger Binny made way for Chetan Sharma. Pakistan made three – Zaheer Abbas, Rashid Khan and Wasim Akram were replaced by Saleem Malik, Wasim Raja and Azeem Hafeez. Javed Miandad, the latter's skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss.

Mohsin Khan faced 17 balls, scoring five. He was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin. Kapil Dev broke the 17-run stand. Mudassar Nazar, who faced 39 balls, scored 14. He was caught by Viswanath. Dev broke the second-wicket S(t)(adan)and, which was worth a dozen.

The third-wicket pair failed to get off the (U)mark. Qasim, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Dev. Rameez Raja, who faced a dozen balls, scored four. He was caught by Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Sharma broke the four-run stand.

The fifth-wicket partnership was worth 68. Imran Khan scored 35. His 67-ball l included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. Malik scored a run-a-ball 14. He was caught by Sharma. Sivaramakrishnan broke the 30-run partnership.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t open its account. Miandad scored 48. His 92-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was stumped by Viswanath off the bowling of Sivaramakrishnan. Wasim, Rameez's older brother, scored 21. His 26-ball innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten. Incidentally, it was his last One-day International appearance.

Tahir Naqqash, who faced eight balls, scored 10. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Viswanath. Ravi Shastri broke the 11-run stand. Anil Dalpat, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Shastri. Sivaramakrishnan broke the three-run stand.

Although Hafeez, who faced 28 balls, was unbeaten, he wasn’t in seventh heaven. India conceded 18 extras. Pakistan scored 176 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Mohinder Amarnath, who bowled nine overs, conceded 27. He was wicketless, as was Madan Lal, who bowled six overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15.

Sharma bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 17, picking up a wicket. Shastri bowled 10 overs, conceding 44. He picked up a wicket. Sivaramakrishnan and Dev bowled nine overs apiece, picking up three scalps each. While the former conceded 35, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 23.

Shastri, the player of the series, scored 63. His 148-ball innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten. Srikkanth, the player of the match, scored 67. His 77-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was caught by Wasim. Imran broke the 103-run stand.

Azharuddin scored 25. His 26-ball innings included three boundaries. Naqqash broke the 39-run partnership. Dilip Vengsarkar faced 32 balls, scoring 18. He was unbeaten. Pakistan conceded four extras. India scored 177 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 47.1 overs, winning by eight wickets with 17 balls to spare.

Malik bowled a couple of overs, conceding 15. He was wicketless, as were Wasim (who concedsd 42 off 7.1 overs), Mudassar (who conceded 26 off eight overs) and Hafeez (who conceded 29 off 10 overs, which included a maiden).

Naqqash and Imran bowled 10 overs apiece, picking up a wicket each. While the former, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 35, the latter, whose spell included three maidens, conceded 28.

India, who remained undefeated, won the Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket.
