The Coca-Cola Cup, which commenced in Sharjah just three days after the final of the Pepsi Cup, while India hosted. Besides the difference in the venues, the other difference between the two triangular series was the third team vying for the title – while Sri Lanka made the Pepsi Cup a sub-continental affair, England joined India and Pakistan in the Emirate.

Four days after Pakistan beat India in the Pepsi Cup final, the arch-rivals met again in Sharjah. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Amay Khurasiya and Ajit Agarkar (Moham)made way for Azharuddin (who was leading the team) and Sunil Joshi. Pakistan made no changes to the eleven that last played the Indians.

Another similarity between the two matches was the toss. On winning it, Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers put on 11. Saeed Anwar, who faced 11 balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Sixteen balls into the match, Anil Kumble ran him out.

The sixth-wicket pair had no reason to be (Mo)in seventh heaven. Khan didn’t face a ball. Three balls later, Joshi ran him out. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Akram, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 28. The next ball, he was dismissed by Prasad.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Azhar Mahmood didn’t face a ball. The next ball, Mongia ran him out. Arshad Khan, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

Ganguly, whose 46-ball (Saqla)innings included a boundary, scored 26. Twenty-six balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Mushtaq, who broke the 26-run stand. Azharuddin had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Moin. Mahmood broke the five-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Ajay Jadeja, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was trapped leg before wicket by Mahmood. Singh, whose 60-ball innings included a boundary, scored 26. A hundred and eighteen balls later, he was caught by Yousuf. Afridi broke the 51-run partnership.

Dravid, who faced 79 balls, scored 28. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Ahmed. Afridi broke the 10-run stand.
