India (Azharudd)inconsistent; Pakistan level series

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Sourav Ganguly made way for One-day International debutant Sanjay Raul. Interestingly, the format is abbreviated to ODI, which happen to be the first three letters of his state (Odisha). Pakistan made no changes to theirs. On winning the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, inserted the Pakistanis.

Saeed Anwar, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 21. Twenty-eight balls into the match, he was caught by Azharuddin. Javagal Srinath broke the 25-run stand.

Aamer, Pakistan’s skipper, scored 25. His 32-ball innings included three boundaries and a six. Fifty-five ballS(ohai)later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Ajit Agarkar. Shahid Afridi, whose 49-ball (Jat)innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 56. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Paranjpe. Hrishikesh Kanitkar broke the 37-run stand.

Saleem Malik, who faced nine balls, scored four. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Nayan Mongia. Kanitkar broke the 10-run stand. Ijaz Ahmed, who faced four balls, scored a couple. Six ballS(uni)later, he was caught by Mongia. Joshi broke the three-run stand.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, whose 49-ball included five boundaries, scored 35. Sixty-one balls later, he was caught by Venkatesh Prasad. Raul broke the 43-run stand. Khan, whose 83-ball (Mo)innings included eight boundaries, scored 69. He was unbeaten.

Azhar Mahmood, who faced 31 balls, scored 10. Fifty-seven balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Srinath broke the 30-run stand. Abdul Razzaq, who faced nine balls, scored a run. Ten balls later, he was caught by Mongia. Prasad broke the four-run stand.

Mohammad Zahid had a reason to be in seventh heaven – his 11-ball innings included a boundary. Twenty-five balls later, he was caught by Azharuddin. Agarkar broke the 22-run stand. Aaqib Javed, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 15 extras. Pakistan scored 246 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Raul bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 13, picking up a wicket. Kanitkar, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 22. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Prasad and Joshi bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 56, the latter conceded 37. Agarkar and Srinath bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 59, the latter conceded 54.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 64-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 24. Ninety-eight balls into the chase, Zahid broke the 57-run partnership. Azharuddin, whose 40-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 25. Fifty-six balls later, he was caught by Khan. Mahmood broke the 39-run stand.

Mongia, whose 58-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 41. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Inzamam. Mahmood broke the run-a-ball stand. Dravid, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Forty-six balls later, he was caught by Razzaq, who broke the 31-run stand.

Paranjpe, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Eight balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Mohammad Yousuf (then known as Yousuf Youhana). Malik broke the five-run stand.

Kanitkar, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 24. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Sohail. Razzaq broke the nine-run stand. Agarkar, whose seven-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Ten balls later, he was caught by Afridi. Malik broke the eight-run stand.

Raul, who faced 13 balls, scored eight. Five balls later, he was caught by Mahmood. Razzaq broke the two-run stand. Joshi, whose 11-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Yousuf. Malik broke the 13-run stand.

Srinath, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 21. He was unbeaten. Prasad, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Fourteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Malik, who broke the 20-run stand.

The Pakistanis conceded 16 extras. The Indians, who were dismissed for 195 off 46.3 overs, lost by 51 runs. Javed, who bowled seven overs, conceded 24. He was wicketless, as was Afridi, who bowled eight overs, conceding 27.

Zahid, who bowled five overs, conceded a dozen. He picked up a wicket. Mahmood, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets. Razzaq, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 48. He picked up three wickets. Malik, who bowled 6.3 overs, conceded 36. He picked up four scalps.

The five-match series was levelled at 1-1.
