India (Srik)kan(’)t(h) beat the Pakistanis

India (Moham)made one change to their playing eleven – Azharuddin made way for Sanjay Manjrekar. Pakistan made five changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Shahid Saeed, Shoaib Mohammad, Sohail Fazal, Saleem Yousuf and Waqar Younis made way for Aamer Malik, Rameez Raja, Imran Khan (who led them), Wasim Akram and Akram Raza. On winning the toss, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, India’s skipper, chose to field.

Aamer, whose 83-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 51. He was caught by Ajay Sharma. Mohinder Amarnath broke the 97-run stand. Saleem Malik, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 14. He was caught by Srikkanth. Ajay broke the 28-run stand. Javed Miandad faced 23 balls, scoring 13. He was trapped leg before wicket by Arshad Ayub, who broke the 40-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair failed to open its account. Raja, whose 90-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 77. He was caught by Kapil Dev off the bowling of Srikkanth. Abdul Qadir, whose 14-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 17. He was caught by Dilip Vengsarkar. Ayub broke the 31-run stand.

Ijaz Ahmed, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 29. He was caught by Raman Lamba. Dev broke the 46-run stand. Khan, whose 39-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 47. He was unbeaten, and was adjudged the player of the match.

Akram, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was trapped leg before wicket by Manoj, who broke the one-run P(rabhak)artnership. Raza, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was unbeaten. India conceded 21 extras. Pakistan scored 279 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Chetan Sharma bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 23. Srikkanth, who bowled four overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket.

Ajay bowled five overs, conceding 38. He picked up a wicket. Prabhakar bowled nine overs, conceding 41. He picked up a wicket. Dev and Amarnath bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 60, the latter conceded 45. Ayub bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31, picking up a couple of scalps.

Lamba, whose 63-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes, scored 57. He was caught by Aaqib Javed. Qadir broke the 120-run stand. The second-wicket pair put on a dozen. Srikkanth, whose 75-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 65. He was run out. Vengsarkar, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. He was caught by Khan. Raza broke the 23-run stand.

Chetan, who faced 16 balls, scored 10. He was caught by the substitute. Mushtaq Ahmed broke the 11-run stand. Jimmy, whose (Amarna)thirty-six-ball innings included a boundary, scored 20. He was caught by Qadir. Mushtaq broke the five-run stand. Ajay, who faced five balls, scored just a run. Mushtaq broke the five-run stand. Dev, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 17. Akram broke the 13-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on just seven. Manjrekar, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a run. He was run out. Kiran More, who faced three balls, scored just two. Aaqib broke the five-run stand. The Hyderabadi, who faced A(yu)ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was trapped leg before wicket by Akram, who broke the one-run stand.

Pakistan conceded a dozen extras. India, who were dismissed for 202 off 42.3 overs, lost by 77 runs. Aaqib bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 32, picking up a wicket. Qadir, who bowled eight overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

Raza bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 47, picking up a wicket. Akram bowled 7.3 overs, conceding 21. He picked up a couple of wickets. Mushtaq bowled 10 overs, conceding 51. He picked up three scalps.

Both the teams advanced to the semi-finals.
