India lose under Gavaskar’s caP(ak)(is)ta(i)ncy

This 40-overs-a-side match marked the One-day International debut of Mumbai medium-pacer Balvinder Singh Sandhu. While Roger Binny wasn’t picked for the series, Dilip Doshi wasn’t in India’s playing eleven. Sunil Gavaskar, who replaced Dev as India’s Kap(il)tain, inserted Pakistan on winning the toss.

Their openers put on just five. Mohsin Khan, who faced 10 balls, scored all of them. His innings included a boundary. He was dismissed by Madan Lal. Zaheer Abbas scored 10. Hs run-a-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Dev off the bowling of Lal. 

The third-wicket stand was worth 24. Mudassar Nazar, who faced 26 balls, scored 20. His innings included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. Javed Miandad, the player of the match, scored 106. His run-a-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten.

Imran Khan, Pakistan’s captain, scored 49. His 59-ball innings included three boundaries and a six. Dev broke the 111-run stand. Mansoor Akhtar, who faced 29 balls, scored 21. His innings included a couple of boundaries. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. Pakistan scored 224 for the loss of four wickets off 40 overs. Sandeep Patil bowled a couple of overs, conceding 14. He was wicketless, as were Ravi [who bowled S(hastr)ix overs, conceding 41], Sandhu [who bowled eight overs, conceding 55] and Mohinder Amarnath [whose eight overs, which included a maiden, yielded 20].

Dev bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 41 and picked up a wicket. Lal, who bowled eight overs, conceded 39. He picked up a couple of scalps.

India’s openers put on just a couple. Gavaskar, who faced five balls, scored a run. Imran trapped him leg before wicket. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 15 balls, scored six. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Wasim Bari. Imran broke the 11-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on 71. Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 47 balls, scored 39. His innings included five boundaries. He was run out. Patil, who faced nine balls, scored four. He was caught by Mohsin Khan. Mudassar broke the 16-run stand. 

Dev faced 12 balls, scoring 15. His innings included a six. He was caught by Akhtar. Jalal-ud-Din broke the 20-run stand. Amarnath, who faced 62 balls, scored 51. He was caught by Tahir Naqqash. Jalal-ud-Din broke the one-run stand.

Yashpal Sharma, who faced 52 balls, scored 56. His innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Syed Kirmani, who faced 41 balls, scoring 27. His innings included a boundary.

The Pakistanis conceded 11 extras. India, who scored 210 for the loss of six wickets off 40 overs, lost by 14 runs. Abbas bowled an over, conceding six. He was wicketless, as were Ijaz Faqih and Naqqash, who bowled eight overs apiece. While the former conceded 38, the latter conceded 31.

Mudassar, who bowled seven overs, conceded 50. He picked up a wicket. Imran and Jalal-ud-Din bowled eight overs apiece, picking up two scalps each. While the former conceded 38, the latter, whose spell included two maidens, conceded 36.

Pakistan led the four-match series 1-0.
