The IndianS(uni)lose yet (Pakist)another series

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri and Lal Mad(an)e way for Arun Lal and a couple of One-day International debutants – left-arm spinner Maninder Singh and medium-pacer Thirumalai Sekhar.

Pakistan made just one – Shahid Mahboob made way for Sarfraz Nawaz. It was a 40-overs-a-side match. On winning the toss, Sunil Gavaskar, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Arun, who faced 34 balls, scored 16. His innings included a six. Nawaz broke the 41-run stand.

Mohinder Amarnath, who faced 22 balls, scored eight. His innings included a boundary. Nawaz broke the 13-run stand. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 76 balls, scored 48. His innings included five boundaries. He was caught by Tahir Naqqash. Ijaz Faqih broke the 66-run stand.

Yashpal Sharma, who faced 42 balls, scored 27. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Imran Khan, Pakistan’s skipper. Nawaz broke the four-run stand.

Kapil Dev, who faced 18 balls, scored 20. His innings included a boundary and a six. He was caught by Mansoor Akhtar. Imran broke the 38-run stand.

Gavaskar, who faced 26 balls, scored 23. His innings included a boundary and a six. He was caught by Wasim Raja. Imran broke the 30-run stand.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 22 balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten, as was Syed Kirmani, who faced eight balls, scoring a run.

Pakistan conceded 32 extras. India scored 197 for the loss of six wickets off 40 overs.  Naqqash and Mudassar Nazar bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden, apiece. While the former conceded 38, the latter conceded 30.

Faqih bowled eight overs, conceding 51. He picked up a wicket. Imran bowled eight overs, including three maidens. He conceded 15 and picked up a couple of wickets. Nawaz bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31 and picked up three scalps.

Mohsin Khan, who faced 10 balls, scored five. His innings included a boundary. Balvinder Singh Sandhu trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the nine-run stand.  Mudassar faced 89 balls, scoring 61. His innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten.

Zaheer Abbas, the player of the match, scored 113. His 99-ball innings included 11 boundaries and three sixes. He was caught by Amarnath. Sandhu broke the 170-run stand. Javed Miandad, who faced a dozen balls, scored six. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. The Pakistanis, who scored 198 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 35 overs, won by eight wickets with five overs to spare.

Gavaskar bowled a wicketless overs, conceding four. Srikkanth bowled a couple of overs, conceding 27. He was wicketless, as was Sekhar, who bowled four overs, conceding 19. Dev bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 11.

Singh and Sharma bowled eight wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 39. Sandhu bowled seven overs, conceding 38. He picked up both the wickets that fell.

Pakistan won the four-match series 3-1.
