Ganguly-led India beat the Pakistanis

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Javagal Srinath made way for Venkatesh Prasad. Pakistan made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Saeed Anwar, Ijaz Ahmed, Azhar Mahmood and Shoaib Malik made way for Imran Nazir, Abdul Razzaq and the Khans (Younis and Arshad).

On winning the toss, Moin Khan, Pakistan’s skipper, chose to bat. Shahid, who faced a ball, (Afri)didn't get off the mark. Seven balls into the match, he was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin, the player of the match. Prasad broke the one-run stand.

Razzaq had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a couple. Nine balls later, he was caught by Ajay Jadeja. Ajit Agarkar broke the four-run stand. Nazir, whose 51-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 43. Seventy-seven ballS(uni)later, Joshi broke the 57-run partnership. Pakistan’s 100 came off the 27th over.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 46. Mohammad Yousuf, whose 36-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. Seventy-eight (Sa)balls later, Karim ran him out. The fifth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Inzamam-ul-Haq, whose 77-ball (Rob)innings included three boundaries, scored 41. The next ball, he was caught by Karim off the bowling of Singh.

Younis, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, Anil Kumble broke the two-run stand. Wasim Akram, who faced 28 balls, scored 10. His runs came by way of a boundary and a six. Forty-two balls later, Prasad broke the 18-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Waqar Younis, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Half-a-dozen balls later, Joshi ran him out. Arshad, who faced nine balls, scored a run. Fifteen balls later, Kumble broke the three-run stand.

Moin, who faced 33 balls, scored 14. Thirty-four balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Joshi, who broke the 15-run stand. Shoaib Akhtar, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was unbeaten.

India conceded nine extras. Pakistan were dismissed for 146 off 45.3 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 21. Singh, who bowled four overs, conceded half-a-dozen. He picked up a wicket.

Agarkar bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 31, picking up a wicket. Joshi bowled 9.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29, picking up a couple of wickets. Prasad and Kumble bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 29, the latter, whose spell included four maidens, conceded 26.

Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, scored 25. His 32-ball innings included four boundaries. Fifty-three balls into the chase, he was caught by Moin. Akram broke the 39-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 28-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Fifteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Akhtar, who broke the two-run stand.

Rahul Dravid, whose 70-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 26. A hundred and eighteen balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Malik. Razzaq broke the 70-run partnership. Azharuddin, whose 89-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 54. Thirty-nine balls later, he was caught by Moin. Arshad broke the 21-run stand.

Jadeja, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. He was unbeaten. The fifth-wicket pair put on 13. Although Singh’s 20-ball innings included a boundary, he had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 27 balls later, Younis ran him out. Karim, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t open his account. He was unbeaten.

Pakistan conceded 15 extras. India, who scored 149 for the loss of five wickets off 43.3 overs, won by five wickets with 39 balls to spare. Afridi bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15. Waqar bowled seven wicketless overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 15.

Arshad bowled 7.3 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 21, picking up a wicket. Razzaq and Akram bowled eight overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 42, the latter conceded 33. Akhtar bowled eight overs, including three maidens. He conceded 19, picking up a wicket.
